West Brom are reluctant to part with Jonas Olsson and are prepared to hang on to him for another year even he decides against signing a new contract.
The Baggies are willing to risk losing the centre-half for nothing at the end of his current deal in 2013.
They would prefer to see him agree fresh terms, and hope imminent extension talks will prove to be productive.
West Brom officials are due to meet with Olsson to discuss his future following Sweden's elimination from Euro 2012.
They hope the 29-year-old can be persuaded to prolong his association with the club, fending off reported interest from Tottenham, but would be happy to keep him regardless of the outcome in those talks.

Value

Technical director Dan Ashworth told the Express and Star: "There wasn't a huge outlay on a transfer fee so we don't need to make a huge amount of money back if we decided to run the contract down.
"We would have to weigh it up and decide whether there is a transfer offer that meets the value of getting a replacement.
"It's a difficult one to answer because we haven't had any offers and I don't want to sell him."
Olsson made it clear before he headed off on international duty that he would prefer not to enter the final year of his contract with his future still undecided.
He has become a key figure for the Baggies since making an £800,000 move from NEC Nijmegen in 2008.
