Sam Allardyce is reported to have instructed his lawyers to initiate legal proceedings against his successor as Blackburn manager, Steve Kean.
Allardyce, the current boss at West Ham, has taken action following the release of an inflammatory video.
In a clip released online, Kean is heard making derogatory comments about Allardyce.
He questions his former mentor's integrity, branding him a 'crook'.
The footage was filmed by Blackburn fans during the club's pre-season tour of the Far East in the summer of 2011.
Allardyce is now planning to take legal action against Kean, and his former employers at Ewood Park.
Kean was due to hold talks with Rovers' owners Venky's on Tuesday after suffering relegation out of the Premier League.

Campaign

He has struggled to win over a sceptical fan base since being appointed to succeed Allardyce, who was axed in controversial circumstances in December 2010.
The BRFC Action Group, who have claimed responsibility for the footage, have long campaigned against Kean and Venky's.
They appear to have stepped up their activity since demotion to the Championship was confirmed and they have now arranged meetings with Government officials and the Premier League to air their concerns.
Blackburn MP Jack Straw has facilitated a meeting of the fans with sports minister Hugh Robertson, scheduled for June, and the Premier League have agreed in principle to meet them too.
A statement from the group's committee read: "We as a group of supporters, elected by its members, are disgusted that our club has been allowed to be pillaged with very little resistance from the regulatory bodies who should act in the best interest of the sport and supporters.
"We are pleased to announce that the Premier League has invited the BRFC Action Group for a full meeting to take place in the next couple of weeks.
"We are further delighted that the Sports Minister has also agreed to a similar meeting to discuss the goings on, behind the scenes, at our club
